Climb aboard the Golden Eagle Danube Express and get ready for the rail journey of a lifetime. Return to the “golden age” of European rail travel of the early 20th century, when traveling by train was the most romantic way to explore the Continent.
It all starts in Vienna where you’ll tour Belvedere Palace, a museum with works by Monet, Van Gogh and the world’s largest collection of Gustav Klimt paintings. Spend the day exploring the city with all of its unforgettable sights, then you’re invited to a private reception at the Schonbrunn Palace, the summer residence of the Emperor Franz Joseph, inspired by Versailles.
The next day you’ll embark on The Danube Express, your elegant hotel-on-wheels for the next three nights.
Settle into your well-appointed cabin, where coordinated fabrics, wood-paneled walls and brass fittings evoke the glamour of the “age of steam.”
Each spacious yet intimate sleeper cabin features two full-size picture windows and a full-length sofa which converts to a sumptuous King Size bed at night. In Deluxe Cabins, two comfortable armchairs provide daytime seating; during dinner, the living room is converted into two comfortable lower beds by your attendant.
Private bathrooms feature a shower with constant hot water, washbasin, toilet, heated towel rail, shaver socket, hairdryer, toiletries and dressing gown. Cabins have individually controlled A/C, lighting with dimmer switches, individual reading lights, power sockets and a safe.
When you leave your cabin, the elegance of a bygone era continues in the Bar Lounge Car – the social heart of the Danube Express and a great place to relax and meet with friends – and on the train’s vintage-style restaurant cars, featuring fine food, great wines and attentive service as you whisk past the scenic alpine landscapes of central Austria.
Stops along the way include Lake Achen, the Fjord of the Alps; the resort capital of Tyrol; and Zurich, where you’ll take a walking tour of the Old Town. After crossing the Gotthard Pass with its dramatic views of granite peaks and plunging valleys, you’ll enter Italy, stopping first in beautiful Lake Como, before arriving in Milan where you’ll spend the last two days of your journey.
The hotel accommodations on this elegant journey are first class. In Vienna you’ll be staying at the Hotel Bristol, consistently ranked as one of the finest hotels in the world by the readers of Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler.
In Milan you’ll enjoy the Excelsior Hotel Gallia, a luxury Collection Hotel, built in 1932, this unique property transforms from historic exterior to exceptionally chic interiors which fit this eclectic, exciting city.
