Allegiant Air exits Gary/Chicago International Airport

Allegiant Airlines will pull out of Gary/Chicago International Airport after this summer, leaving the airport without regularly scheduled passenger service. The Airport Authority announced Friday that it had received a May 17 letter from Allegiant saying its last scheduled flight from Gary would take place Aug. 10, according to the website. Gary/Chicago International Airport has billed itself as “Chicago’s real third airport.” Airport officials have positioned the northern Indiana airport to help ease congestion at Chicago’s larger airports, O’Hare and Midway. Allegiant is the latest in a string of six airlines that have entered and pulled out of the Gary market. Most, like Hooters Air, went out of business after ending their Gary fights. (USA Today)
