Hurricane season has begun in earnest with travel warnings and airline change waivers for storms in both the Atlantic and Pacific. It will be a week of firsts for Hawaii as it is hit by two hurricanes in quick succession (Madeline and Lester) and Lester is anticipated to be the first hurricane to make landfall on the Big Island. Madeline will skirt the island this afternoon as a Category 1 hurricane, while Lester, currently a Category 4 hurricane, is expected to hit sometime on Saturday night. Meanwhile in the Gulf of Mexico, Tropical Depression Nine is expected to strengthen to a tropical storm, then could near hurricane strength before its Florida landfall Thursday, bringing heavy rain, storm surge flooding, high winds, even some tornadoes. Delta, Hawaiian Airlines and United have already issued change fee waivers for travelers who are affected by the storms. Other airlines may issue waivers as well.
