The recent announcement by US and Mexican officials that flights between the two countries will no longer be limited to just a few carriers for each city pair signals a new era for service between the neighboring countries. This loosening of government interference, combined with Delta’s increased presence in the market via its partnership with Aeromexico, signals increased competition with American and United, which should yield lower prices for travelers along with expanded capacity. A founding SkyTeam member, Aeromexico recently announced direct flights from Mexico City to Amsterdam starting in May 2016. Amsterdam will be the carrier’s fourth destination in Europe. Currently, American and United each service about a quarter of flights between the US and Mexico. Look for Delta and Aeromexico to quickly ramp up service challenging the two majors for market dominance.
